Hanging Them Up

I haven't shared with many that I had a goal to run a half marathon in Salt Lake City this year but I did. Well, my foot and ankle doctor advised me at my appointment the other day that it would be wise for me to stop running or else I would most likely end up in surgery. It actually didn't come as a hard blow. Everything he discussed with me seemed to be coming or I already knew yet it is still sad. For those of you who are runners or enjoy running you will understand. There is just something about it that is so appealing. I usually went early in the morning and would love to watch the sunrise and smell the fresh air from the sprinklers, (or bubbler systems our here in Vegas), being on all while getting a good workout. Now I want to get a bike soon and start a new form of excercise. There is just something about being outdoors when you workout. Could it be the feeling of being one with nature. A little sappy? Yes, but I know some of you must feel the same. So, I'm in the market now for a street bicycle. Preferably one that is red and shiny that will take me back to the days I first learned how to ride a bike. Minus the banana seat. I might be hanging up my running shoes but I could never stay away from staying active outside somehow.

I am so sorry to hear about your feet and ankles. I just started running last year and can't wait for spring to come to dust off my running shoes (oh how I wish I lived in Vegas, so I could run more) My stepmom took up biking and loved it! Anything that gets you moving and keeps you happy and sane! Good Luck on finding a good bike...keep us posted!

Marleen, that's too bad. I didn't know you loved running so much, and training for a half marathon! I'm sorry about it all. I'm sure you'll love what ever you find to replace it.

I am so sorry. I know it is hard to stop doing that kind of workout. That would be horrible for me! Hang in there!

I also love being outdoors. In Laramie we lived close to three parks. I had a double stroller and went walking all of the time. Now we are far from parks or neighborhoods. I haven't been able to do that here. I am sorry you have to give up running. I think getting a bike is a great idea.

Marleen, I can totally relate. I absolutely love to exercise outdoors and used to go jogging all the time. Two summers ago, I had to have bi-lateral knee surgery and my doctor and physical therapist said running is out of the question for me. Running a marathon was always on my list of things I wanted to do before I died, but now that won't be happening. I took up bike riding outdoors last summer and loved it. I felt like a kid again. I also have learned to love walking really, really fast! :) Good luck and know that I am sympathizing with you.

Marleen, I am so sorry! I don't think I will be ready for the 1/2 marathon this year, but I will do it next year in your name!! Good luck with biking, if that is what you end up doing! I am a terrible biker!!
